Onyx is a variety of banded chalcedony that forms when silica-rich fluids slowly deposit layers within rock cavities, often in limestone or volcanic environments. The black onyx seen here developed through repeated mineral layering over long periods of time.

The lighter cream and beige areas are natural host rock, primarily limestone or calcite-based matrix, while the rusty yellow and brown tones come from iron oxide staining introduced during formation. Fine pale lines and speckling are natural mineral veining and inclusions, not damage.
