Obsidian is a natural volcanic glass, formed when silica-rich lava cools so rapidly that crystals don’t have time to grow. The beautiful sheen seen in these pieces is created by tiny inclusions and structures within the volcanic glass that interact with light — which is why the effect can suddenly appear, disappear and change as you turn the carving.

The Goddess shape is traditionally associated with feminine energy, creation, fertility, abundance and the cycles of life. Her rounded form and crescent-like opening above the head give these carvings a wonderfully ancient, symbolic appearance.
